Bargue Plates
Charcoal drawings rendered by Jim Lyons
With encouragement, support and assistance of Sasha Banks
The Bargue book plates were enlarged to full size at the
Maple Grove MN Office Depot Copy Center by Scott Biesert
My drawings are made from plates in the book titled
Charles Bargue and Jean Leon Gerome Drawing Course
assembled by Gerald M Ackerman published by ACR Edition 2003
The Drawing course was first published in 1864.
The book contains 197 plates.
It was designed to prepare beginning art students to copy life, nature,
and objects both natural and man-made.
This project started several months ago when I happened upon Youtube videos presented by Mandy Theis from The Da Vinci Initiative. A series of Bargue Lessons that show step by step how to use a "sight size" method of drawing. After completing all of the lessons and seeing my own results, which I found most satisfying, I continued the process for the next several months and completed 25 plate rendered in charcoal. Below are the results of this project.
All of my drawings were made on Strathmore Drawing paper 18 in x 24 in 64 lb
More to come.
